Exotic Pets snakes
The body is elongated without limbs. Body length from 10 cm to 12 m.
From legless lizards snakes differ a movable coupling of left and right parts of the jaws (which gives the ability to swallow prey whole), no moving of the eyelids and the tympanic membrane, lack of the shoulder girdle.
The teeth are sharp and thin, adnate to the edges of the jaw bones or connected to the jaw using special cords. Poisonous snakes have large, sharp, curved back teeth. These teeth have a groove on the front surface or internal channel through which the poison in the sting gets into the wound. Do Viper snakes because of their mobility shortened maxillary bones poison fangs can rotate 90°. Poisonous teeth in some cases (Gabon Viper) reach a length of up to 4,5 cm.
Snakes are distinguished by a large number of vertebrae (200 to 450).
The eyes are covered with a kind of “lenses” — fused transparent eyelids. External ears are absent, however, snakes can feel vibrations from the earth and sounds in relatively narrow frequency range.
Compared with other reptiles, snakes have the most developed body of thermal sensitivity, which is on the front hole between the eye and nose on each side of the head. I alkoholowych snakes turbolocator allow to determine even the direction of the source of thermal radiation. However, they perceive infrared radiation from surrounding objects, electromagnetic waves, namely as heat.
Zmeev are mainly terrestrial way of life, but some species live underground, in water, on trees. Under adverse conditions, e.g. cold weather, snakes go into hibernation.
All known snakes — predators. Eat a wide variety of animals: vertebrates and invertebrates. There are species of snakes that specialize in eating a certain type of prey, such as crayfish snake (Regina rigida) feeds almost exclusively on crayfish, and egg snakes (Dasypeltis) — only the eggs of birds.
Non-poisonous snakes eat live prey (e.g. snakes) or pre-kill it, pressing jaws and pressing body to the earth (slender runners) or suffocating in the rings of the body (Boas and pythons). Poisonous snakes kill the prey, in giving her body the poison with the help of specialized doprovodem teeth.
Snakes usually swallow prey whole. The mechanism of ingestion is to alternate moving the right and left halves of the lower jaw (like a snake pulls himself to the prey).
Most snakes reproduce by laying eggs. But some species are ovoviviparous or viviparous.
